THE CLASSIC CAR BOOT SALE AT KING’S CROSS
<< Back to Blog

This weekend 9th and 10th September The Classic Car Boot Sale returns to King’s Cross, London.

“Forget what you think you know about car boot sales: ruinously early starts; dodgy bacon butties; polystyrene cups of tea; rain-swept fields; dingy-haired humans stomping around in dirty tracksuits; banged-up Fiestas touting toot…Instead, picture vintage vehicles and retro treasure.” – mrandmrssmith.com

The finest vintage fashion, accessories and homeware traders operating from the boot of their vintage vehicles alongside a show stopping exhibit of classic cars, London’s finest street food wagons, impromptu musical performances, street theatre and all manner of vintage fun that can be had on two and four wheels!

It’s definitely not to be missed during your stay with us in King’s Cross, and is just across the street.

We recommend a hearty brunch at Megaro Eatery to set you up for the day, but of course there are other options!

The King’s Cross Classic Car Boot Sale is on the 9th and 10th September, from 10am until 6pm. Tickets are available on the door for £5.  More details are available HERE.

GIN MASTERCLASS: EAST LONDON LIQUOR COMPANY AT MEGARO BAR
<< Back to Blog

We’ve partnered with East London Liquor Company to bring you a Gin Masterclass on Tuesday 12th September right here in King’s Cross.

Few beverages are as synonymous with historic London as gin. For good or ill, it’s been the Capital’s tipple since the 1700’s. Megaro Bar has not been here quite that long, but we still enjoy a good gin, and have been  keenly pushing the London gin revival in recent years.

East London Liquor Company opened in an ex-glue factory in July 2014, the first gin, vodka and whisky distillery in East London for over a century. They focus on top quality ingredients, traditional distillation methods and innovation, all of which come through in their ever growing portfolio.

Want to join us?

Tickets for our Gin Masterclass are available now at £18 per person. East London Liquor Company will give an informative and engaging talk about their gin, the distillation process and the botanicals involved. In addition to tastings the ticket price includes 4 gin based cocktails and some snacks. The event will last approximately two hours. Please click HERE to book your place, places are strictly limited.

East London Liquor Company: All About The Gin

The East London Liquor Company signature London Dry Gin is distilled using the finest 100% British wheat spirit both vapour and direct infused with fresh lemon & grapefruit peel, coriander, angelica root, juniper berries, cubeb berries and cardamom. The bright, fresh flavours of the citrus and juniper give way to the spiciness of the cubeb berries and cardamom, making this an excellent gin & tonic spirit, topped off with a wedge of lime.

East London Liquor Company Premium Gin Batch No. 1 has a quintessentially British note added by the inclusion of Darjeeling tea. It’s distilled from 100% British wheat spirit along with juniper berries, coriander seeds, cassia bark, angelica root, pink grapefruit peel and cubeb berries. Whether in a Darjeeling gin sour or served neat, the spices work with the fresh grapefruit to tame the tea’s tannins,
offering a balanced yet dry taste.

East London Liquor Company Premium Gin Batch No. 2 has a distinctive herbaceous and savoury profile. Distilled from 100% British wheat spirit and infused with juniper berries, coriander seeds, orris root, angelica root, lemon peel, thyme, winter savoury, fennel seeds, sage, bay leaf and lavender, we had a typical English herb garden in mind when creating the recipe -perfectly served in a negroni or wet martini.

Launched in January 2016, East London Liquor Company release their gin aged in various wood finishes throughout the year. The launch featured their signature London Dry Gin aged in new French oak barrels for 14 weeks. The casks imparted the classic vanilla and dried fruit notes found in bourbon, while complementing and enhancing the botanicals of the gin, particularly its cardamom notes. Classically drunk neat, it also makes for a distinctive Negroni.

Please note: Attendees must be over 18 year of age, it’s not Victorian times anymore!

UPDATED SEASONAL MENU AT MEGARO EATERY
<< Back to Blog

We’ve just updated our seasonal menu at The Megaro Eatery here in King’s Cross.

We work hard to keep our menu fresh, always seeking the best seasonal produce from around the UK to bring you some of the very best food in King’s Cross. We’ve just updated our menu with some new dishes.

Fowey mussels are cooked in a Ginger Pig cider and cream sauce, available as a starter or main. The main is served with our triple cooked chips for a filling lunch.

Our blue mussels are from Fowey on the Cornish coast and are are classed as the most sustainable to eat by the Marine Conservation Society. They also happen to be delicious, being what we consider to be the very best estuarine farmed mussels available.

According to the Cornwall Seafood Guide: “Blue mussels are found naturally growing all around Cornwall’s coast. There are now several companies farming mussels in Cornwall’s estuaries and bays. This practice is very environmentally friendly as the mussels grow naturally, feeding on passing plankton. Unlike fish farming where large amounts of feed is used and polluting waste is created mussels have a minimal impact and the farms actually create sheltered habitat for other species. Always ask for Cornish farmed mussels.”

Another new starter is our treacle cured Loch Duart salmon. The use of this classic British black treacle, made from molasses, brings some unusual, slightly bitter flavours which work in harmony with the salmon and the earthy tones of the pickled beetroot. The dill cream brings a further texture and a tangy lift.

Gressingham duck breast is served with a fig compote, glazed baby carrots, Swiss chard and an incredible chicken liver parfait. The tender duck breast is perfectly complemented by the tangy fruit compote. The parfait is extremely light though with intense flavour, which adds a deeper dimension to the dish. Highly recommended.

All of our dishes can be paired with some amazing wines from our extensive wine list. Selected carefully by our expert sommelier Richard Weiss, the wine list features many wonderful varieties. We offer a large number of Biodynamic wines, part of our ongoing commitment to supporting organic farming and viticulture. Our staff will be happy to advise you on pairings.

THE MEGARO EATERY: NATIVE LOBSTER MENU
<< Back to Blog

Please note: This menu is seasonal and is now unavailable as of 7/09/17.

At our Megaro Eatery here in King’s Cross, we just launched our special native lobster menu.

As always, we have a sharp focus on the integrity of our ingredients. We source the freshest and finest native lobsters, harvested from the waters of the British Isles.

Our native lobster menu offers three glorious courses for just £24.50, a summertime taste of the British coast in the heart of the city.

  • Native lobster home-made tagliatelle, with a lobster bisque foam
  • Half native lobster, cooked on the Josper grill, served with triple cooked chips, Choron sauce and young leaves
  • Roasted figs in port, with fig leaf ice cream

Lobster tagliatelle at Megaro Eatery King's Cross

We’re very proud of our home-made pasta, and this tagliatelle is no exception. Served with tender pieces of native lobster, peppers and our home-made lobster bisque foam, it makes a fantastic starter.

Cooking the lobster on our Josper grill enhances the flavour, and brings some fabulous barbecue notes to the dish. Truly special. The Choron sauce, a Bearnaise sauce with tomato puree and diced tomato, is almost too delicious.

The grilled figs in port rounds off the menu, with the delicate fig leaf ice cream cleansing the palate.

To book, please call us on 020 7843 2221 or book online here.

FOOD FOR BEING LOOKED AT – AN EXHIBITION
<< Back to Blog

We’re no strangers to taking photos of our food here at Megaro Eatery, or indeed cocktails at the Megaro Bar for that matter. And we see lots of you doing the same. Social media, especially Instagram, is full of food, bursting at the seams in fact.

It’s a little strange, but then again it’s great to see what new places are serving up, and what old favourites have cooked up to keep us coming back. Like our steaks: people just keep coming back for them, over and over. You can never have too many pictures of your steak it seems.

During your stay with us in King’s Cross at the The California Hotel or the  Megaro Hotel we’ve a recommendation:  ‘Food For Being Looked At’, a new small exhibition a The Photographers’ Gallery just off Oxford Street. The exhibition examines the phenomenon and you can read more here, including some handy food photo tips. The exhibition runs until October 8th, alongside a permanent collection as well as other temporary exhibits.

We’d also invite you to take pictures of our food while your dining with us, naturally!
